Jill MacMillan, ASSETS School
Deeply
involved with many nonprofits throughout the community, Jill
is a true Volunteer in Philanthropy. Sole proprietor of a
real estate brokerage and consulting company, Jill finds the
time to volunteer and fundraise for the Junior League, Child
& Family Service, Honolulu Academy of Arts, American Heart
Association, The Contemporary Museum, and the Honolulu
Symphony. That’s just to name a few! ASSETS School is proud to have Jill as a current
trustee who also co-chaired ASSETS’ gala fundraiser for many
years during a period of dramatic growth for the event.
Indru & Gulab Watumull,
Castle Medical Center
The
Watumull family name is synonymous with philanthropy. Indru
and Gulab Watumull graciously donated personally and through
the Jhamandas Watumull Fund and have become part of the
Castle Medical Center Ohana. Family waiting areas and the
gift shop were named after the Watumull family. Castle
Medical Center extends special thanks to Indru and Gulab
Watumull for their support and generosity in assisting
Castle Medical Center in caring for our Windward community.
Marianita Lopez,
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i would like to recognize Marianita
“Nita” Lopez for her volunteer efforts and dedication. As a
former affiliate board chair, past board vice chair, and
past program board chair, Nita has been an invaluable leader
and supporter of Catholic Charities for many years. Catholic
Charities Hawai‘i is privileged to have Nita’s expertise and
guiding hand. As a volunteer and as a family attorney and
partner with the law firm Saccoccio and Lopez, Nita
personifies CCH’s core values of dignity, compassion, social
justice, and commitment to excellence.
Aimee Ogata, Child &
Family Service
Aimee
serves as Chair of the Child & Family Service Guild, a
volunteer group of 35 that supports CFS by organizing
fundraising and other special activities and events. Under
her leadership, the Golf Tournament has raised more than
$150,000 per year and the ‘Ohana of the Year luncheon has
attracted 400 people to celebrate the accomplishments of
families served by CFS. As Guild Chair, Aimee serves on the
Board of Child & Family Service. She has gained the respect
of Board members for her diligence, sense of humor and
dedication to the CFS mission.
Pat Barron, The
Contemporary Museum
Pat
has been volunteering with The Contemporary Museum since it
opened its doors in October 1988. She started by helping in
the gift shop and then became a regular volunteer at the
Visitor Information Desk. For the past 19 years she has
welcomed thousands of visitors with her warm smile, great
sense of humor and friendly personality. TCM is proud to
count her as a true Volunteer in Philanthropy and one of its
real treasures.
John Wesolosky, The
Contemporary Museum
Whether The Contemporary Museum’s exhibition crew needs help
installing a new show or the Friends of The Contemporary
Museum need manpower for the museum’s ConTempo fundraising
event, John is always there. Since 1999, he has been an
active volunteer in all areas of the museum. No matter what
the task may be, The Contemporary Museum knows it can count
on John to get the job done and done well.
Allyn Bromley, The
Contemporary Museum
Allyn
is an accomplished artist and retired University of Hawaii
art professor who wears many hats at The Contemporary
Museum. She has been a docent tour guide at TCM for nearly
twenty years and has shared her creativity and knowledge
with thousands of visitors. As a Trustee of the museum, she
represents the artist voice in the community, and as part of
TCM’s Capital Campaign team she is invaluable as a role
model of generosity, enthusiasm and commitment.
Jeffrie Jones, Hawaii
Theatre Center
Hawaii
Theatre Center has been blessed with Jeffrie’s support since
launching its Stars volunteer auxiliary group in
2004. She is currently serving her second term as Stars
board president and served as vice president for the two
prior years. She has volunteered to work whenever and
wherever help is needed on each of HTC’s fundraising events
for the past three years. Jeffrie is a rare individual –
talented, gracious, generous, dependable, willing and always
cheerful. Everyone at Hawaii Theatre Center feels privileged
to work with her and to call her friend.
Stella MacGowan,
Honolulu Academy of Arts
The
Honolulu Academy of Arts salutes Stella MacGowan who has
been volunteering at the Honolulu Academy of Arts since she
and her husband retired and moved to Honolulu in 1982. She
started as a server in the Garden Café and then helped the
Academy’s Public Relations Department where her typing and
filing skills proved invaluable. Since 1991, she has
volunteered at the Academy Art Center at Linekona. She
continues to provide invaluable assistance in all aspects of
the Art Center’s operations including customer service,
registration, record-keeping and cataloguing. Stella is the
ultimate volunteer!
Maeona Mendelson,
Honolulu Academy of Arts
Maeona
has been a docent at the Honolulu Academy of Arts for 28
years. She has served as Docent Council Chair and edited the
first docent newsletter. Through her work as co-director of
the Millennium Young People’s Congress in 1999, the Academy
hosted dignitaries and youth from 110 nations at a gala
evening showcasing international youth art and Hawaii’s
young dance and music talent. In 2006, Maeona led a cuisine,
art and architecture tour of Morocco with Academy docents.
The Academy is honored to recognize Maeona as a 2007 VIP.
Jo-Lynne Natori,
‘Iolani School
Jo-Lynne is a volunteer extraordinaire. Devoting time and
talent to her children’s school and extracurricular events,
Jo-Lynne is a mom on a mission who serves quietly and
steadfastly at any task that needs to be
accomplished. Tackling challenging and detailed tasks is her
specialty. Jo-Lynne’s most rewarding responsibilities are
the hundreds of hours she has given to ‘Iolani School and
Queen Emma Ballet . . . quieting kids, serving meals, sewing
costumes and, of course, cleaning up. Jo-Lynne is everyone’s
dream of the best volunteer ever!
W. Douglas Ferreira,
Maryknoll School
When
Doug Ferreira retired from his career in the hospitality
industry, he turned his considerable energy toward his alma
mater, Maryknoll School. For the past two years, Doug has
served as the lead volunteer for the alumni campaign to
build the Maryknoll School Community Center. He is also a
member of the Alumni Council and the 80th
anniversary committee. Maryknoll School is deeply grateful
for Doug, who so generously lives out the school motto,
Noblesse Oblige – “to whom much is given, much is
expected.”
Patsy Federcell, Maui
Arts & Cultural Center
Patsy
Federcell has been volunteering at the Maui Arts & Cultural
Center since it first opened in 1994. In addition to
volunteering at numerous other organizations, Patsy has
volunteered more than any of the hundreds of MACC volunteers
– over 12,000 hours! A retired school teacher, Patsy serves
as a theater usher, helps with school field trips, labels
seat numbers for rock and roll concerts and so much more!
But most of all, Patsy gives her heart and soul, which truly
is priceless.
BJ Kobayashi, Nature
Conservancy & Punahou School
Punahou School and The Nature Conservancy are proud to
celebrate BJ Kobayashi as their Volunteer in Philanthropy.
Board member of The Nature Conservancy and actively involved
in leading Punahou’s Annual Fund, BJ is a strategic thinker
with great passion. He also co-founded The GIFT Foundation
of Hawaii to raise awareness of nonprofits that make a
difference. Whether helping spearhead the Nature
Conservancy’s “next generation” initiative, co-chairing his
Punahou 25th Reunion Committee or developing new
models for personal philanthropy, BJ inspires all volunteers
to reach their fundraising and service goals.
Elmer Yuen, Sacred
Hearts Academy
Whether helping to spearhead a major fundraising event for
Sacred Hearts or serving on the Board of Directors and the
Parent Board, Elmer shares his gift of time and talent with
commitment and dedication. Elmer’s magnanimous spirit is
also shared with other organizations and associations such
as the Hawaii Alliance for Retired Americans, General Policy
Board of the National Council of Senior Citizens and the
HGEA Board of Directors Retirees Unit. We thank Elmer, his
wife Barbara and daughters – Holly, Michelle and Kelly, all
graduates of Sacred Hearts!

Susan Fuller, ASSETS School
Advocate for gifted education
and vital member of Hawaii’s educational community for
decades, Susan is a true volunteer in philanthropy. She
served on the State Advisory Council for the Gifted and
Talented, still serves on the board of the Hawaii Gifted
Association, and co-founded Reading Is Fundamental,
Honolulu, a volunteer book distribution program that now
serves 15 schools and 4,700 children. ASSETS School is
proud to have had Susan as a trustee for 15 years and as
co-chair of ASSETS’ gala fundraiser during a period of
dramatic growth for the event.
James
Walsh, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i
For
over 10 years, Jim Walsh, Vice President of Provider
Services at HMSA, has been a dedicated volunteer and
supporter of Catholic Charities Hawai‘i and its mission to
help those most in need. A member of Catholic Charities
program board, Jim previously served on the board of
directors and as board chair. Through his work with the
Notre Dame Club, Jim also coordinates many volunteer
projects with Catholic Charities programs. Mahalo nui loa to
Jim for his unwavering support and leadership of Catholic
Charities Hawai‘i.
Mark
Felmet, Hawaii Foodbank
Mark was the
volunteer personally chosen by former First Hawaiian Bank
Chairman Walter Dods to join the Hawaii Foodbank Board of
Directors in 1994. Since 1996, Mark has played an
instrumental role in developing the Patriots Celebration –
the Foodbank’s premier annual fundraising event that honors
people from Hawaii who made a significant national
contribution. Past honorees include Ellison Onizuka, the 442nd
Regimental Combat Team, Hawaii’s Olympians and the U.S. Army
25th Infantry Division.
Peter
Ho, Hawaii Foodbank
Peter joined the Hawaii Foodbank
Board of Directors in 2002 perpetuating his family’s
tradition of volunteer service at the Foodbank. His mother,
Mary Ho, was interim president and charter member of the
board in 1982. Peter first joined the Patriots Celebration
committee as Table Sales Co-Chair in 2003. In 2005, he
assumed the role of Chair for the event overall. Under his
leadership with Table Sales Chair Mark Felmet, the event has
consistently exceeded its fundraising goals to help feed the
hungry in Hawaii.
Mele
Pochereva, Hawaii Theatre Center
Hawaii Theatre Center has been
blessed with Mele Pochereva’s enduring support since it
re-opened in 1996. She has volunteered to work whenever and
wherever help is needed on countless fundraising and special
events throughout the years. In 2004, Mele helped found
Stars, HTC’s auxiliary organization of volunteers. She
has served as a member of its board and edited its
newsletter ever since. Mele is a rare individual –
talented, gracious, dependable, willing, and always
cheerful.
Alison
Manaut, Honolulu Academy of Arts
Alison
Manaut, a well-known abstract painter, began volunteering at
the Academy more than 30 years ago. She joined a group of
volunteers who created the museum’s weekly floral displays.
Alison and the group continue to create their unique floral
sculptures at the Academy, and Alison is responsible for the
beautiful arrangements in the Academy’s Gift Shop. Alison is
also very active with the Garden Club of America, serving as
a national judge for flower arranging. The Academy is very
proud to honor Alison Manaut as an outstanding volunteer.
Stephen McClaran, Honolulu Academy of Arts
Stephen first volunteered at the Academy in 1991 when he
helped evaluate silver items to be sold at auction. As a
docent, he realized the important contributions made by
Academy founder, Anna Rice Cooke. His interest in Mrs.
Cooke was the basis for a lecture about the Academy’s
opening day in 1927, which he gave to celebrate the 75th
anniversary. He is now helping to mount an exhibition of
Mrs. Cooke’s gifts, which will be on view during the 80th
anniversary year. The Academy is very proud to honor
Stephen as an outstanding volunteer.
Robert
Peters, Honolulu Symphony
As
principal of Hanahau‘oli School since 1982, Dr. Bob Peters
strongly supports an integrated curriculum committed to
celebrating the arts. Music and art are part of the
children’s experience on campus each day. Bob chairs the
Early Childhood Education Task Force for the State of Hawaii
and heads the Education Committee of the Honolulu Symphony
Board of Directors. The Symphony’s youth music education
programs serve 25,000 keiki throughout Oahu with 18
orchestra concerts and 175 free in-school ensemble
performances annually.
Susan Spangler, Honolulu Symphony
Susan
Spangler, former President of the Honolulu Symphony
Associates, has played a leading role in the success of the
Symphony's Youth Concerto Competition for nearly eight
years. Each year, the Competition attracts nearly 70
talented young people from throughout Hawaii. The final
performance in Blaisdell Hall, this season on March 17th,
provides a unique opportunity for these young musicians to
perform with the Symphony.
John C. Walker, Jr., Kapi‘olani Health
Foundation
John
C. Walker, Jr. has been an active volunteer for various
organizations since the 1960s and is well known for his
commitment to the Kapi‘olani Health Foundation, where he has
served as Chairman and as a board member since 1999. Few
people in Kapi‘olani’s 100-year history have spent more
years volunteering their time, effort, and resources for the
women and children of Hawaii than John Walker. Kapi‘olani
Health Foundation is what it is today thanks to the
volunteerism of Mr. Walker.
Mervin
& Waynette Cabral,
Maryknoll School
Waynette and Mervin Cabral are the consummate volunteers at
Maryknoll. Waynette has been team mom and videographer for
volleyball and basketball; camp chaperone; and past co-chair
for both the luau decorations committee and Project
Graduation. Together, the Cabrals have worked on the
school’s fundraising and Parent-Teacher Guild events and now
co-chair the high school parent committee for the school’s
capital campaign. Maryknoll is truly grateful for the
Cabrals and the spirit with which they share their abundant
time and energy.
Greg & Shirley Yim, Punahou School
Dr. Greg and Shirley
Yim are a dynamic duo, committed to their work in pediatric
neurology and helping their community. As key volunteers
for Punahou’s Middle School Campaign, Greg and Shirley were
fearless and so enthusiastic that people couldn’t resist
contributing to their cause. They garnered the support of
many Junior School parents and inspired new levels of
giving. Punahou is fortunate to have such wonderful
volunteers!
Koren Dreher, Sacred Hearts Academy
Sacred
Hearts Academy salutes its Volunteer of the Year, Koren
Dreher, Senior Vice President at First Hawaiian Bank. Koren
serves on the Community Building Committee of AUW and on the
boards of the Arcadia Retirement Residence, the Hawaii Opera
Theatre, and the Hawaii Theatre Center. Sacred Hearts is
blessed to have Koren as a member of its Board of Directors
since 1989. The Academy values her financial expertise and,
more importantly, her dedication, professionalism, and
enthusiasm for the mission of the school.
Judy Siracusa, Seabury Hall
Judy Siracusa has
served Seabury Hall for the past 14 years on the Board of
Trustees, including seven years as President, Chair of the
Annual Fund, and Co-Chair of the recently completed $14.2
million capital campaign. Her leadership continues in a
myriad of board projects including strategic, development
and financial planning. Judy also serves on the board of the
Maui Arts and Cultural Center and other non-profit
organizations on Maui and the mainland. It is with deep
respect and appreciation that Seabury Hall recognizes the
generosity and vision of Judy Siracusa.
Julia Brown, St. Francis School
Julia Brown began volunteering
at St. Francis School in 1999 after retiring from 32 years
with the Blood Bank of Hawaii. She has served as President
of the St. Francis Alumni Association and continues to work
as a valued member, rallying alumni to the support of her
beloved alma mater. Julia’s genuine love and appreciation
for the school and our alumni make her a treasured member of
our volunteer family.

United Nations
Assoc., Hawaii division salutes it's volunteer of the year
Christopher Matar, award winning student filmmaker and
Honolulu Waldorf School senior. Christopher, UN Youth
Coordinator, organized "Children's Art for Peace Day” at
Kahala Mall and again for Children & Youth Day at the State
Capitol. He also helped to coordinate the Arts & Humanities
Contest and the UN Aloha Peace Forum – all to raise
awareness and funds. Christopher is an outstanding example
of Hawaii's new young volunteer leaders.

Bill’s civil engineering background has been of
tremendous value for the numerous renovations and upgrade

Dennis Hu is
Vice-President and Regional Manager for First Hawaiian Bank.

The Honolulu
Symphony is honored to recognized Bob and Dee Levy as our
Volunteers in Philanthropy. Bob and Dee have been very
involved at the Symphony as fundraisers, volunteers, and
donors over the past several years. Bob served as Chairman of
the Board from 1999-2001 and is currently a member of the
Honolulu Symphony Foundation Board. Dee is a member of the Board of Directors and chaired the
Symphony Ball in 2000. Bob
and Dee are very supportive of many community organizations
and have been dedicated volunteers at Queen’s Hospital for
over 16 years. The Honolulu Symphony is deeply grateful to Bob
and Dee for their commitment to our musicians and to classical

Bill Paul has
had a major impact on our community as a volunteer fundraiser.
He has raised millions of dollars for dozens of organizations
and campaigns, including the Hawaii Visitor Industry Charity
Walk, First Baptist Church, Pepperdine University, American
Red Cross, Variety School, Sex Abuse Treatment Center, Easter
Seals, Mediation Center of the Pacific, the Central YMCA, and
the Nuuanu YMCA.

Charities Hawaii
William Powell has
been a member of the Catholic Charities Hawaii Board of
Directors since 1988 and has served as board treasurer and
chair. Under Mr.
Powell’s leadership, both the Kawaihae Transitional Shelter
on the Big Island and the Waianae Weinberg Village opened to
provide shelter and program services to the homeless.
In 1999, he became the first president of the Catholic
Charities Housing Development Corporation created to develop
and advocate for affordable housing for people with low
incomes.

Academy of Arts
Elaine “Dusty”
Short began her career as a volunteer at the Honolulu Academy
of Arts in 1959. She
started pouring punch at receptions and after taking the
docent training, committed herself to conducting tours.
Her most rewarding experiences as a docent include
arranging a tour of the Academy and The Contemporary Museum
for visiting Rotarians for their National Convention in Hawaii
and working with Duane Preble on “Art Park.”
She has been an active member of various Hawaii arts
and culture organizations throughout her life.
The Academy is extremely grateful for Dusty Short’s
dedication and enthusiasm.

The Hawaii
Children’s Cancer Foundation proudly recognizes Calvin M.
Tamaye as our Volunteer In Philanthropy.
For the past three years Calvin Tamaye and Ace Auto
Glass have raised nearly $25,000 to help defray expenses for
families who have a child battling cancer.

Noel Trainor is
General Manager of Hilton Hawaiian Village and Vice Chair of
Hawaii Foodbank’s Board.
Noel founded the Hawaii Foodbank Hotel Coalition, is a
sponsor of the International Food Service Executive’s
Association Golf Tournament supporting the Foodbank and is
extraordinarily active in all fundraising of the Hawaii
Foodbank including the annual Patriots Celebration.
Noel’s outstanding efforts go a long way toward
feeding the 118,000 different people using the services of the
Foodbank weekly.

Karen has
volunteered at Hawaii Community Foundation for 12 years.
Once a week, she helps keep our scholarship department
organized. Without
a doubt, without Karen, HCF would have to hire someone to do
all the work she does as a volunteer.

Mark Wong
has been an exemplary board member of the Hawaii Theatre,
contributing work, wealth and wisdom.
He actively participates in board meetings, is a patron
of gala events, donated the computer hardware system for the
box office, and is a major donor to the capital campaign. He
also plays the Theatre organ at selected events.
Friends
of the Children’s Justice Center
At the Friends of
the Children's Justice Center (FCJC) we refer to our
volunteers as "Angels."
Lorna Wood is our "Guardian Angel."
She watches over our special projects and puts her
magic touch on them. For
ten years Lorna has volunteered at the FCJC and during that
period of time she has helped more then 6,000 children receive
new school supplies, Christmas gifts and Easter baskets.

Ron McNichols
joined the Board of Directors at Sacred Hearts in 1988. His
commitment to youth, as well as his professionalism,
enthusiasm and positive spirit are all qualities the Academy
values.
University of Hawaii, College of Education
Dr. Don Nugent spent the last eleven years of his Department
of Education service as the Assistant Superintendent for
Office of Personnel Services, Hawaii State Department of
Education. During his twenty-eight years in the Office
of Personnel Services he held various positions encompassing
a wide range of personnel management and industrial
relations functions. Dr. Nugent is currently serving his
2nd, two-year term as President of the College of Education
Alumni Association.
The Honolulu Symphony
Sharon McPhee has been deeply involved as a board
member, fundraiser, volunteer and donor. She has been
a vocal supporter of the importance of music education in
our community, and her commitment to classical music is
tremendous.
Hawaii Children’s
Cancer Foundation
Active with HCCF since 1997, Lei Ohama Rol found her calling
helping children with cancer. Through her enthusiasm,
Lei motivates others to help, such as Build-A-Bear, Sunrise
Rotary, Menehune Mac, to name a few.
Iolani School
Iolani School salutes Volunteer of the Year, Jean Tsukamoto.
Jean serves the school with a caring heart, a bright mind, a
strong work ethic and lots of hard labor. Jean
volunteers with compassion and commitment whether it's for
fundraising, Iolani's Fair, The Parent's Ohana, Foodbank, or
the school's long range planning committee. She leads
by example and so it's no wonder that her daughter Sara,
followed in her mom's footsteps and was selected as one of
today's Young Leaders
in Philanthropy.
Maryknoll School
As a member of the Board, Clyde Matsusaka has devoted
countless hours in leadership in addition to coaching
basketball to the student athletes. Janet Matsusaka
has held key volunteer roles in ensuring successful
fundraising and social events as a member of the Parent
Teachers Guild. Together this husband and wife duo
have generously supported every aspect of Maryknoll’s
fundraising efforts.
USS Missouri Memorial Association
Dorothy "Dot" Hamilton is a “Volunteer Extraordinaire”
tireless and dedicated. She is a retired Chief Yeoman, World
War II WAVE, who keeps the Mighty Mo's fundraising staff in
line.
The Honolulu Academy
of Arts
Jean Culbertson
began volunteering at the Academy of Arts in 1969. Her first
task was to help a group of volunteers launch the Garden
Café. This was a great way to get to know people, and Jean
has enjoyed the Academy ever since. She volunteered
for a number of years in the Café, and was also a member of
the Volunteer Council, a group whose purpose was to oversee
the management of the Café, help hostess at events, and
fundraise. Jean became a docent in 1976, and is
currently recording secretary.
The
Honolulu Academy of Arts
Lila Morgan began her love affair with
the Honolulu Academy of Arts in 1967 after moving to Oahu
from Kauai. She began working with then Director Jim
Foster to implement a program to involve more people in the
Academy. Together they founded the Academy Volunteers
Council. Their two biggest accomplishments were starting the
Garden Café (now the Pavilion Café) and putting together an
extravaganza called ARTPark -- a two day event in Thomas
Square with artists, music and hundreds of people. In
1972 she joined a docent class and for the next 25 years has
been an outstanding Academy docent, and is on the Board of
Trustees.
The Nature Conservancy
Stanley Hong has been a
member of the The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii’s Board of
Trustees since 1991 and was recently the chair of their
Corporate Council for the Environment Committee.
Stanley’s guidance and his prominence as a respected leader
in the business community were key factors in the success of
the Corporate Council's annual campaign. Stanley is
honored for his unfaltering service to protecting Hawaii’s
precious natural resources.
Castle Medical Center
Henry H. Wong played an
important role in the original land donation for the
hospital. Henry and Colene Wong made their own gift of land
in 1988, and we are honored to have Colene Wong as our guest
today.
Catholic Charities Hawaii
During his 13 year tenure
as a board member, Cliff Cisco has always demonstrated a
high level of involvement, and a strong passion for its
mission, participating on numerous committees and chairing
many of them. Board members and staff who have worked
closely with Cliff say he is a visionary, goal-oriented, and
adept at organizational change. When he’s not volunteering,
Cliff is a senior vice president at HMSA.
Hawai`i
Theatre
As the
founding president of Hawaii Theatre Center’s new HTC Stars,
Karen Huffman leads over fifty volunteers who support
fundraising and community relations events. In the two short
months under Karen's leadership, HTC Stars already raised
more than $70,000 and staffed the recent week-long Light Up
The Hawaii! celebration. In 2003, Karen was also also
responsible for the hugely successful fundraising event, The
Caper and serves on the Hawaii Theatre Center board of
directors.

Medical Center
Castle Medical Center feels fortunate to
be one of the many nonprofit recipients of the caring
interest and devotion of Lynne Waihee. For 15 years, Lynne has been a member of
the Castle Medical Center Board and lent her
perceptiveness and understanding of the state of Hawai’i
to the constantly changing challenges facing health
care.
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i
Robert ‘Bob’ Tong has been a
volunteer for Catholic Charities Hawai‘i for 11
years. During
that time, he has served in many leadership
capacities. Bob is a tremendously hard working
volunteer but also a volunteer who does his work
quietly and effectively. He is humble and defers all
recognition to others on his committees.
A board member for only one
year, Kenwei has already made himself
indispensable to Hawaii Theatre Center
because of his cheerful disposition.
He's a silent auction solicitor and
gala table salesman par excellence who also
contributes wisdom far beyond his years.
Kenwei is an outstanding example of Hawaii's
new generation of volunteer leaders.
Hawai’i
Children’s Cancer Foundation
Ron Lee of Real Estate, Inc.
and President of Hawaii CRB Chapter in 1999,
and Crystal Lancaster, education
administrator for the Hawaii Association of
Realtors, are instrumental in the Hawaii CRB
Chapter annual golf tournaments held for the
benefit of Hawaii Children’s Cancer
Foundation. They
have raised over $25,000 in five years to
help families who have a child with cancer.
Crystal Lancaster puts the
tournament together with a very special
energy and loving touch derived from seeing
her nephew die of leukemia about 14 years
ago. Ron Lee was the initiator of the golf
tournament and rallies support from many
companies whose business is related to real
estate.
Through Chuck’s leadership
HINA MAUKA has grown 1000% over the past
five years, to become the largest and most
diverse addiction treatment provider in the
state of Hawaii with 18 locations on three
islands.
Most
importantly, due to Chuck's volunteer
efforts and commitment to our shared
community, over 10,000 adolescents and
adults have returned to their rightful place
in society during his tenure.
Ruth Alison Bastis has been a
supporter of early elementary
education and Holy Nativity School
for many years. In 2002, Ruth
received an Annual Fund appeal from
the Holy Nativity School Board of
Directors and she responded - in the
form of a $150,000 Charitable
Remainder Trust gift.
Ruth's gift is
noteworthy not only for the amount
but also because it marked the first
large donation the school had
received from someone other than a
current or past parent, or someone
directly related to the school.
Arline is one of the
Symphony’s most dedicated
volunteers. She has been an
active volunteer for over a
decade, even when she was
working fulltime as a
teacher and school
principal.

La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls
A class of 1970 alumna, Laurie is an active member of the Board of Trustees, and recently served a two-year term as alumnae president and re-organized the Alumnae Association. She also coordinated the first all-school reunion that drew a record 400 alumnae from around the world. Each year Laurie gives her energy and creativity to HOOPLA, La Pietra’s annual auction, helping to raise money for the scholarship program.
Maryknoll School and PACT (Parents & Children Together) salute Eileen Kauhane Lota for her enthusiastic and tireless dedication to raising more than $1 million for the education of Hawaii’s young people. Eileen has generously shared her leadership skills and tremendous knowledge of planning to ensure that these events are not only financially successful, but also create an opportunity to bring friends and supporters closer to the organization.
On the Punahou Board, Duncan has been a leader with great enthusiasm. During the design of the Middle School, his background in development greatly enhanced his role as Chair of the Building & Grounds Committee. He then became Chair of the Principal Gifts committee for the campaign leading with his personal commitment and inspiration toward Punahou’s $40 million progress.
Since retiring from Design Partners, Owen Chock has been very involved in consulting and community service activities too numerous to mention, from Colorado to Hawai’i. Owen joined the Board of Directors at Sacred Hearts Academy in 1998. The Academy values not only his architectural skill but also his professionalism, enthusiasm and devotion.
Marian Lash is one of REHAB’s most dedicated volunteers.
For over a decade, this octogenarian has landscaped the hospital grounds and tended its gardens, nurtured plants for REHAB’s horticultural therapy program, and arranged flowers for patients. Once confined to a wheelchair for 20 years, Marian is one of REHAB’s living treasures.

Zadoc Brown, Jr. has played a critical role in raising

Dennis Hu is Vice-President

Dee Levy - Honolulu Symphony
The Honolulu Symphony is

Paul - YMCA of Honolulu
Bill Paul has had a major
impact on our community as a volunteer fundraiser. He has
raised millions of dollars for dozens of organizations and

First Baptist Church, Pepperdine University, American Red
Cross, Variety School, Sex Abuse Treatment Center, Easter
Seals, Mediation Center of the Pacific, the Central YMCA and
the Nuuanu YMCA.

Powell - Catholic Charities Hawaii
William Powell has been a
member of the Catholic Charities Hawaii Board of Directors
since 1988 and has served as board treasurer and chair. Under
Mr. Powell's leadership, both the Kawaihae Transitional
Shelter on the Big Island and the Waimea Weinberg Village
opened to provide shelter and program services to the
homeless. In 1999, he became the first president of the
Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation created to
develop and advocate for affordable housing for people with
low income
Elaine
'Dusty' Short - Honolulu Academy of Arts
Elaine "Dusty" Short began
her career as a volunteer at the Honolulu Academy of Arts inn
1959. She started pouring punch at receptions and after taking
the docent training, committed herself to conducting tours.
Her most rewarding experiences as a docent include arranging a
tour of the Academy and the Contemporary Museum for visiting
Rotarians for their National Convention in Hawaii and working
with Duane Preble on "Art Park." She has been an active member
of various Hawaii arts and culture organizations throughout
her life.

M. Tamaye - Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation
The Hawaii Children's
Cancer Foundation proudly recognizes Calvin M. Tamaye as our
Volunteer In Philanthropy. For the past three years, Calvin
Tamaye and Ace Glass have raised nearly $25,000 to help defray
expenses for families who have a child battling cancer.
Noel
Trainor - Hawaii Foodbank
Noel Trainor is General
Manager of Hilton Hawaiian Village and Vice Chair of
Hawaii Foodbank's Board. Noel founded the Hawaii Foodbank
Hotel Coalition, is a sponsor of the international Food
Service Executive's Association Golf Tournament supporting the
Foodbank and is extraordinarily active in all fundraising of
the Hawaii Foodbank including the annual Patriots Celebration.
Noel's outstanding efforts go a long way toward feeding the
118,000 different people using the service of the Foodbank
weekly.
Karen
White - Hawaii Community Foundation
Karen has volunteered at
Hawaii Community Foundation for 12 years. Once a week, she
helps keep our scholarship department organized. Without a
doubt, without Karen, HCF would have to hire someone to do all
the work she does as a volunteer. She is an inspiration to us
all.
Mark
Wong - Hawaii Theatre Center
Mark Wong has been an
exemplary board member of the Hawaii Theatre, contributing
work, wealth and wisdom. He actively participates in board
meetings, is a patron of gala events, donated the computer
hardware system for the box office, and is a major donor to
the capital campaign. He also pays the Theatre organ at
selected events.
Lorna
Wood - Friends of the Children's Justice Center
At the Friends of the
Children's Justice Center (FCJC), we refer to our volunteers
as 'Angels.' Lorna Wood is our 'Guardian Angel.' She watches
over our special projects and puts her magic touch on them.
For ten years Lorna has volunteered at the FCJC and during
that period of time, she has helped more than 6,000 children
receive new school supplies, Christmas gifts and Easter
baskets.

David Fairbanks - Punahou School
David Fairbanks, a Punahou Trustee since 1985, served as Board Chair from 1992-1995. In 1995 the Punahou Alumni Association honored him with
their highest award -- "O in Life". He served as Commissioner for the Hawaii State Judicial Selection Commission, Director for Hawaii Lawyers Care,
Trustee for Clients Security Trust Fund, President of the Hawaii State Bar Association.
Rev. Frank Butterworth - YMCA of Honolulu
Rev. Frank Butterworth has served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Honolulu for nearly 40 years. He first participated in the YMCA annual
support campaign in 1959, when the goal was $30,000. This year, under his leadership, the campaign reached $1 million for the first time.

Charles E. "Chuck" McCrary

Chuck McCrary is BBBS of Honolulu¹s "fundraiser extraordinaire"! He personally accounts for nearly a quarter of the $90-100,000 raised at
our annual Gourmet Affair. Chuck helps plan the event, hustles great auction items, sells raffle tickets and does much more. He inspires us all to
try harder and do more!
Fred Yamashiro

As Vice President of Operations for Nansay Hawaii, Inc, Fred Yamashiro and Nansay¹s development team donated their expertise and labor to plan,
design, and build the Catholic Charities Kawaihae Transitional Housing Project for homeless families on the Big Island. He chaired the first Kawaihae
Golf Tournament that, over the next four years, retired the $80,000 loan for the project.
Rob Hale - Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Oahu
Rob Hale has been a Director with the Friends since its inception. He gives unselfishly of his time and talent, and despite a busy schedule, Rob is
available for meetings, consultations and planning. The vision of a Children's Justice Center is a result of Rob's capacity to observe,
listen and create.

A current member of the Board of Trustees for over 5 years, Jack willingly agreed to Co-Chair Castle Medical Center¹s capital campaign. As former

Mary Mitsuda

An artist and former Director of the Contemporary Arts Center, Mary has volunteered with artists and committee members to restructure the TCM
annual art auction, ContempoRarities since 1999. Thanks to Mary, artists now receive a percentage of the auction price, and the artworks are
exhibited for two weeks prior to ConTempo, the museum¹s fundraising gala.
Sharon Twigg-Smith

Sharon Twigg-Smith, an artist and curator of the Persis Corporation art Collection, has successfully built support for TCM through the annual
ContempoRarities auction. By cultivating major artists, dealers, and collectors from across the United States, she netted $280,000 in 2001,
and over $170,000 in 2000, for a total of $450,000 raised for the Museum.
Nathan Minn
- The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii
Until Nathan Minn power-walked onto the grounds of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, very few people even knew where it was. Nathan
created and orchestrated the Mauka Makai signature fundraising event, enlisting help from the community, raised over $50,000 for cancer research and turned
what was once Hawaii's "best kept secret" into a household name.

Pacific Health Ministry
Mrs. Gladys Ainoa Brandt and Mr. William W. Paty provided outstanding leadership and philanthropy leading the recently completed very
successful first phase of the Pacific Health Ministry capital campaign. Their unabashed enthusiasm is contagious and their untiring efforts are
resulting in increased care to sick, injured, and infirm in our community.
